Golf Destination

The Westin La Paloma has been completely renewed with a $35 million resort-
wide rejuvenation offering 487 guest rooms, 7 dining options, retail shops, the Red
Door Spa, 5 pools, tennis courts, fitness center, and nature walks. Working with
a very unique topography, this 27-hole, Jack Nicklaus-designed course wanders
across and through the Sonoran landscape filled with washes and hillsides with
the nines named Hill, Ridge, and Canyon. The Hill might be the most famous nine
because it was the setting for part of the film “Tin Cup.” To have more fun here,
choose the correct set of tees as there are some holes that have forced carries across
washes that are up to 40 feet deep.

Arizona National Arizona National Golf Course,
                                            another mesmerizing golf track, is
nestled in the foothills of the beautiful
                                            Santa Catalina Mountains and borders
the Coronado National Forest. It follows
the rugged natural flow of the land
                                            across shady mesquite-lined arroyos and
                                            skirts craggy rock outcroppings. Opening
in 1996 and designed by Robert Trent
Jones Jr., this highly acclaimed layout
offers awe-inspiring views of the valley.

Located on top of one of the higher
rolling hilltops in the Catalina Foothills
is a charming resort that offers a
breathtaking panoramic view of the Santa
Catalina Mountains to the north and the
urban sprawl of Tucson to the south, plus
unbelievable sunsets. The Hacienda del
Sol Guest Ranch Resort was originally
built in 1929 by owners John and Helen
Murphey as a college preparatory school
for daughters of society’s elite families Hacienda del Sol

with names such as Campbell, Maxwell, Pillsbury, Spalding, Vanderbilt, and
Westinghouse. Later it was converted into a guest ranch and attracted many of the
leading film stars such as John Wayne, Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, and Katharine
Hepburn. In 1999, a major restoration of the hotel
was completed, retaining and enhancing the original
integrity of the architecture and landscape. Make sure
to view the photo gallery of the school’s early years
in the hallways surrounding the courtyard. Golfers
will appreciate the close proximity of several golf
courses even more because the resort offers golfing
privileges at some neighboring resorts, such as some
mentioned above, as well as public courses.

Tucson International is the closest airport to these
golf destinations, but Phoenix Sky Harbor is another
option just 80 miles to the north. You can learn a
great deal more if you check the websites of these
                  Southwestern golf escapes.
