16 BISHOP’S GUIDE
CONDUCTING GRAVERIDE SERVICES
Traditionally, the head end of the casket is placed on the west end of the grave. The service
should also be conducted at the west end of the grave, as well as the prayers and talks.
Those attending the graveside services should be invited to gather close to the grave in order
to hear the service proceedings. It is also appropriate to express thanks to those attending and
then announce the service format. A graveside service can be as short as a dedicatory prayer, or
can include some talks and musicals.
Graveside services should be short in time due to the consideration of those in attendance
standing. If the service is to be more than half an hour, then a funeral service should be
considered.
When the service is completed, appreciation should again be expressed. It is also beneficial
to announce that the cemetery will complete the burial after everyone has departed, following
which family and friends can again visit the grave. If there is a luncheon, it is appropriate at
that time to invite those in attendance to attend that.
SUPPORT AFTER THE FUNERAL SERVICE
Surviving family members need continual support and fellowship. Here are some suggestions to
consider in offering support.
Visits: The most difficult time for survivors is the 3 months following the death. Christ-
mas, birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries are other specific times of hardship. A simple visit
can relieve a heavy emotional load.
Assistance: Many widows are uniformed about financial matters. It might be helpful to
arrange a consultation meeting with the widow and a specialist. Some sound counsel on insur-
ance, banking, saving, and budgeting can negate some anxious feelings. Berg Mortuary staff
will provide a free consultation with a professional financial advisor when needed.
Involvement: Activity and involvement are very therapeutic. Soon after the funeral services,
it would be beneficial for the survivor to become occupied with a church job or community
activity.
Bereavement support groups are available; please contact Berg Mortuary for an updated list.
