to prepare students to become knowledgeable and ethical decision makers as they fulfill their
roles as consumers, workers, and citizens.
One of the main reasons that I chose business education as my content area is because of my
educational and work experience. I received my bachelor’s degree in communication from the
University of Mary in 2011. Following my graduation, I had the opportunity to work in a variety of
businesses. Those included a privately-owned bank, a state university athletic department, and a
website design and information technology company. Each experience exposed me to a variety of
different business practices and I am hoping to bring that knowledge and experience into the classroom.
I am very fortunate to have those experiences and I think that they will be a valuable asset to my
teaching.
As I have continued my studies in education, I have begun to familiarize myself with both the
national and state standards of business education. I was initially surprised to learn about the many
different areas business education covers. There are certain areas such as communication and
marketing that I am especially interested in because of my background knowledge but I am also looking
forward to expanding my knowledge in other areas such as business law, economics and technology.
I would use these documents as a foundation for my curriculum planning. I think that it will be
important to integrate these standards into all areas of my curriculum and also use them as guide to
effectively planning my lessons.
