They provide a way for teachers to guide their instruction and modify or change it to meet the needs of
all students. The data collected from assessment allows teachers to identify the strengths and
weaknesses of each student. Assessment provide students an opportunity to reflect the concepts and
skills that they have been taught. Students are given feedback on their learning progress and able to use
that feedback to motivate their performance or as self-reflection.
In my current classroom, we are using a variety of assessments. Those assessments include
quizzes, tests, and exit slips. I have used exit slips on numerous occasions. I especially like this type of
assessment because it gives me immediate feedback on the students’ understanding of the subject
matter. As I spend more time in the classroom, I am looking forward to using a combination of
diagnostic, formative and summative assessment.
