actively participating in its activities.
The number of international masters, title-
holders of championships of the Asian continent
and socialist countries has considerably
increased. Since 1963, the Mongolian free-style
wrestlers’ team has successfully competed in the
Olympics and international tournaments, being
among the six best. Mongolian boxers, athletes,
mountain-climbers and weightlifters rank highly
judged from international standards.
The Mongolian sportsmen, inspired by the
leadership and care of the MPRP and the
government are determined to defend the honour
of their motherland in the international arena of
sports.
Mongolian sportsmen are now looking
forward to their participation in the Moscow
Olympics. They will try their utmost to create
world records.
The participation of our boxers in the Ninth
Asian Boxing Championships held in Bombay at
the beginning of 1980 was part of their training
for the Moscow Olympic Games. On March 16,
1980, The Times of India said: “As an insight into
Asia’s rating for the Moscow Games — the recent
championships were expected to throw more light
on this aspect — the prospects are hardly bright,
the only promising ones of the lot being India’s
Birendra Singh Thapa, Korea’s light-middle II
Ching Park and Mongolia’s deadly duo R.
Otgonbayar (featherweight) and G. Batbileg (light-
weight). A tough lot, these Mongolians. Their
showing this year has emphasised that they are
certainly going to be a force in Asian boxing.” That
is also the impression of all Indian sports-lovers
for whom our boxing team became a real
discovery. Our boxing team won two gold and two
bronze medals at these championships.
