SPORTS IN POLAND
Sports have been, and will, for centuries to
come, be among the most important means of
educating the younger generation. This was the
case in ancient Greece, and this is the case all
over the world today.
Olympic laurels won in peaceful international
competitions - in the most friendly of all rivalries
— are in essence a testimony to the fitness of a
nation. The Olympic Games are also meant to
popularise sports among nations.
How had sports developed in Poland before it
achieved the indisputable successes that it can
pride itself on today? Here are a few notes on the
history of sports in Poland before the Olympics.

harquebus, musket, etc., for prizes awarded by
the town councils were held very often indeed, so
that with time these became a veritable school of
