been active for three years as a 3rd category
coach and passed an examination following 14 to
28 days training, or if he has completed the
course at the Faculty of Physical Training and
Sports at Charles University in Prague. In order
to be appointed a 1st category coach, a person
must have been active as a 2 category coach for
nd
at least three years, and, in addition, must have
completed a course at the above—mentioned
faculty, or must have completed special studies
for coaches.
There are now over 1,300 1st category
coaches, nearly 9,400 2 category coaches and
nd
nearly 27,000 3 category coaches. This means
rd
that there is one coach for every 3 1 members of
sports sections.
A person must satisfy the stipulated
conditions and possess requisite qualifications
before he can be appointed as instructor of basic
and recreational physical training. Similarly,
conditions for appointment of referees have also
been laid down.
Mass physical culture displays have a long-
standing tradition in- Czechoslovakia. The first of
them was held in 1882. The progressive traditions
of working-class physical culture festivals — the
first of them was organised by the Federation of
Workers Physical Training Associations in 1921
— was followed by Czechoslovakia’s post-war
spartakiads.
The first was held in 1955, the second in
1960, the third in 1965 and the fourth in 1975.
In the course of preparations for the 1975
spartakiad, 1,476 local displays were organised
which were attended by 377,211 gymnasts. These
events were followed by 307 sub-district
spartakiada attended by 499,581 gymnasts and
114 district spartakiada in which 607,911
