In January 1993, Czechoslovakia split into
the two sovereign states of the Czech
Republic and Slovakia.
SPORTS IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA
In socialist society physical training is
regarded as an important component of all-round
harmonious development of man and as an
inseparable part of the entire educational
process. Physical training helps to maintain and
improve the health of the people, makes them fit
and alert and enriches their leisure. In
Czechoslovakia active physical training has
become a permanent part of the life of hundreds
of thousands of people. The socialist state gives
broad support to sports and games and creates
favorable material and technical prerequisites for
them.
In pre-war Czechoslovakia, there were a
number of large sports and physical-training
organizations as well as several thousand local
sports clubs which were associated in federations
and unions. However, the post-war changes in
political life made it possible to bring together all
