History of the Department:
In 1990’s, the role and responsibilities of the State Branch Offices Social/Demographic Programme
were expanded from performing merely the functions of data - Prices, Income and Expenditure Statistics
collection and manual editing and coding to a more effective Division
role in statistical operations. In the process, the management - Population and Housing Census Statistics
of the household frame was transferred from the Population Division
- Demographic Statistics Division
and Housing Census Division to the State Branch Offices. In - Manpower and Social Statistics Division
responding to the demand for more timely data, computerised - Agriculture and Agro-Based Statistics
Division
data processing was handed over to the State Branch Offices. - Environment Statistics Division
The first of such survey was the Labour Force Survey in 1994.
Economic Programme
In 2001, the State Branch Offices were upgraded and known - Services Statistics Division
as the Department of Statistics State Office and each was - National Accounts Statistics Division

headed by a Director. In the same year, the Headquarters was Statistics Division
relocated from Wisma Statistik, Jalan Cenderasari Kuala Lumpur - Balance of Payments Statistics Division

Kuala Krai, Kapit, Lahad Datu and Kota
Marudu, giving a total of 28 POs; and
• The administration of PO Labuan came
under the purview of the Department of
Statistics, Wilayah Persekutuan.
