History of Data Collection Chronology
History of Data Collection:
In the initial years of its establishment, the collection, processing
and compilation of data was confined to statistics that were of 1891 The first population census covering the
Straits Settlement and the Federated Malay

data have been compiled since the early 1930s. At that point census was undertaken for the year 1901,
1911, 1921, 1931 and 1947.

1930’s External Trade Statistics was collected by
the Customs Department for three regions
namely the Federated Malay States,
Unfederated Malay States and Straits
Settlements.
Data collection in Peninsular Malaya and
Borneo focused on commodity such as
rubber, spice, tin, coal and others.
Data on rubber estates were collected
for Peninsular Malaya in 1931. The data
collection stopped during Second World
War (1941-1945) and was continued in
1946.
1944 The report of Evacuees Census Table 1944
was published.
Post External Trade Statistics was collected for
World the British by the Customs Department
War II under the Customs Ordinance.
Data on crops production in estates were
collected by a section of the Agriculture
Department.
1949 Centralised data collection by the Bureau
of Statistics under the Statistics Ordinance
1949.
1955 The beginning of the compilation of
National Accounts Statistics.
