23 SEPTEMBER 1037
Dear Diary,
We finally made it through the desert without encountering
any bandits. We are in Damascus now. This is our final destination
before heading back in three months time. We found ourselves a
place to stay and markets where we can sell our wares. It is even
more colourful than Merv here. The Arabian traditions are
breathtaking. From the scimitar-swinging daredevils on the streets,
to the belly dancers with their seductive moves. The weather is real
nice. The market is always noisy with people and music. The whole
city is scented with perfume and spices. At night, the city is as
colourful as ever, with lanterns lighting the whole place in different
shades like a whole new planet, of beauty, to be frank. The mosques
and palaces are grand and bizarre, with decorations and features
never seen in China. This is the farthest West I have ever been, and
certainly does not disappoint me. I began selling my carpets,
spices, and silk yesterday evening. At least half of a quarter of
them had been sold. That is OUTSTANDINGLY fast. I will probably
have about a couple of months to spare, and enjoy the city. The
people here are very friendly. Arabians are also Muslims, just like
the Persians. I made some friends; Abdul and the unnaturally tall
Mohammed. They are always smiling, and have wonderful
manners.
