Eclipse of the Sun

An eclipse of the Sun occurs when the Moon is situated between the Sun and
Earth in a straight line. The Moon prevents some or all of the sunlight from
reaching Earth’s surface. Thus, the shadow of the Moon will be formed on
Earth’s surface during an eclipse of the Sun. Observe the picture below.

An eclipse of the Sun
will only occur during
daytime. This globe shows the path of the
Moon’s shadow on Earth’s surface.
A total eclipse of the Sun and
a partial eclipse of the Sun can
be seen from the region of the simulation of an
umbra shadow path. Whereas, eclipse of the Sun
only a partial eclipse of the Sun
can be seen from the region of
the penumbra shadow path.

Based on the positions of the Sun, the Moon, and Earth as shown above,
an eclipse of the Sun only occurs during the new moon phase.
