Conclusion: Reflection of The “Big Book” project teaches Basir to recognise and

learning experience use alphabets to introduce his family members. Parental
cooperation is needed in completing the project.
Teachers provide flexibility to parents in terms of time

and ideas to implement the project. Parents are
encouraged to do activities together with the

children. They should ask simple questions about the
family, such as, how to address the parents and
siblings. The parents should also spell the alphabet with

the children while doing the “Big Book” project.
Recognizing alphabet is a prerequisite skill for future
literacy instruction. Children with special needs would
require more time and direct instruction to acquireletter
recognition. The use of flashcards is one of the multiple
methods to acquire this skill. One of the methods

developed here in the school is a project-based learning,

referred to as the “Big Book” project. The project, not only
use an array of colourful letters to form simple words, but
also initiate communication and teamwork between

parents and children with special needs. The parent-
children team was tasked to create the “family tree”,

using simple words designated within the family,
