1. A student carries out an experiment to investigate the relationship between the absolute temperature, T
and the length of air trapped, h at a constant air pressure. The set up of the apparatus is shown in
Diagram 1.1.

A drop of concentrated sulphuric acid is inserted into the capillary tube so that some air is trapped
inside. The capillary tube is then tied onto a metre rule so that the lower end of the trapped air is
placed at the zero reading of the metre rule. A little ice is added into a beaker of water until the whole
part of the trapped air is immersed in the water. Water is heated slowly while being stirred
continuously until the temperature rises to 20.0 C. The length of the trapped air, h, is measured. The

experiment is repeated at temperatures 40.0 C, 60.0 C, 80.0 C and 100.0 C. The corresponding
readings of h are shown in Diagrams 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6 on page 290 and 291.
