                       More than 200 million people worldwide have malaria,
                                                                     infection without adequate chemoprophylaxis and in
                    and more than 1 million die of it each year, making it the
                                                                     immigrants from areas of endemic infection. It is not
                    most common lethal infectious disease. It occurs primarily
                                                                     endemic in the United States. Certain regions in Southeast
                    in tropical and subtropical areas, especially in Asia, Africa,
                    and Central and South America. Malaria in the United
                                                                     Asia, South America, and east Africa are particularly
                                                                     affected by chloroquine-resistant strains of P. falciparum.
                                                                     People who have lived or traveled in areas where malaria
                                                                     occurs should seek medical attention for febrile illnesses up
                                                                     to 3 years after leaving the malarious area.
