Past simple Past continuous
Positive I worked… / She went… / They ate… I was working. / She was going. / They were eating.
Question Did you eat? / Did she go? / Did they eat? Were you eating? / Was she going? / Were they
eating?
Negative I didn’t work. / She didn’t go. / They didn’t I was not working. / She was not working. / They were
eat. not working.
• We used simple past tense to describe complete action.
• Past continuous tense is used to describe incomplete action at a past time.
• Past tense can also be used to make requests, questions and suggestions more polite because it sounds less
direct than present tenses.
Example: • Could you lend me a hand?
• Would you be home this afternoon for lunch?
• I was hoping if you could teach me how to make a burger.
