                      Nouns

                    A noun is the name of a person, an animal, a thing or a
                     place. The following are different types of nouns:

                    A singular noun refers to one item.                 A plural noun refers to two or more than
                      e.g. a man, one goat, a tree, the park            two items.
                                                                        e.g. two men, five goats, many trees,
                                                                            those parks
                 The following are the rules for the formation of plural nouns:
                   1 Add -s                                       5  Change -f or -fe to -ves

                     e.g. girls, cups, cats, stems                 e.g. leaf – leaves, wolf – wolves, life – lives,
                                                                       knife – knives
                   2 Add -es to nouns ending in -ch, -sh, -x, -s

                     e.g. branch – branches, brush – brushes,    6  Change vowels in the middle
                         fox – foxes, class –  classes             e.g. goose – geese, tooth – teeth, foot – feet
                   3 Nouns ending in -o take -es. But some of them       7  Have the same form in the singular and the

                                                                 8  Always in the plural form

                     (i) change -y to -ies
                     e.g. baby – babies, party – parties         9  Have irregular form in the plural         Language  Bank
                                                                   e.g. child – children, ox – oxen, mouse – mice
                     (ii) add -s only when there is a vowel before -y
                     e.g. boy – boys, key – keys, tray – trays
