                   The Present Continuous Tense



                  The present continuous tense is used:        Subject        Verb           Example
                  (i)  to show an action that is going on at the
                    time of speaking.                            I         am           • I am studying
                      e.g. The phone is ringing now.            You                      now.
                         They are doing their homework at the
                        moment.                                 We         are          • The managers are
                  ( ii) to express a planned future action.     They            + -ing   having a meeting

                      e.g. Mr Lee is flying to England tomorrow.    Plural nouns     form  at the moment.
                             We are going for a picnic next Sunday.

                                                                 Time expressions: now, at the moment, at
                                                                 present, tomorrow, next year/holiday, etc.



                   The Past Continuous Tense


                  The past continuous tense is used:
                  (i)  to show an action or two simultaneous actions going on in the past.
                      e.g. We were walking home in the sun.
                             Susan was swimming in the sea while her brothers were playing on the sand.
                  ( ii) to show an ongoing past action interrupted by a shorter action.
                      e.g. I was watching television when the lights suddenly went off.
