English Year 6 Grammar
The def nite article ‘the’ is used to refer to either a singular or plural noun as well as
uncountable nouns. It refers to a specif c thing or quantity and introduces the specif c thing
or people that we have mentioned before.
定冠词“the”用于指单数、复数以及不可数名词。它用于指特定事物或数量，以及介绍
我们之前已经提过的事物或人物。

We use ‘The’ when we want to indicate or refer to:
我们用“The”来表示：

something unique or when there is only one such thing in the world.
独一无二的事物或世上只有一个的事物。
e.g. The sun is shining brightly today. The stars are twinkling in the sky.

something which has already been mentioned.
之前已经提过的事物。
e.g. Mr Chin bought a puppy for his daughter. The puppy is very adorable.

the superlatives or ordinal numbers.
最高级形式或序数词语。
e.g. Mr Quek is the most generous man I have ever met.

names of geographical areas or points, rivers, oceans, seas, mountains or groups of
islands.
地理名词，例如河流、海洋、山或岛屿等。
e.g. The Nile is regarded as the longest river in the world.
The equator divides the Earth into the northern and southern hemispheres.

The indef nite articles and the def nite article can be used with different kinds of nouns as
shown in the table below:
