6 The Ugly Duckling

Mother Duck was unhappy because her youngest duckling was big and

ugly. Ugly Duckling could swim well, just like her other ducklings. All the other
farmyard animals made fun of him. His brothers and sisters were unkind to

him. Sometimes, when Mother Duck was angry, she wished that she could
get rid of him.

At last, Ugly Duckling could not bear it any more. He ran away. He came

to the big marsh where the wild ducks lived. He lived there until he could
spread his wings and f y. He f ew to a lake and saw three beautiful swans.

Then, he saw his own ref ection in the water of the lake. He looked like a swan.
He was a swan!
