The national costume of Vietnam, now commonly worn by women, is called ao dai.
It consists of a full length f tted dress which is worn over a pair of black or white loose
f tting trousers. There is a slit on both sides of the dress from the waist down.
It is worn at special occasions such as traditional festivals, weddings or
graduations. In some high schools or universities, female students wear white ao
dai as a uniform.
Vietnamese men’s costume is a variation of the women’s ao dai. It is shorter
and not f tted. It is worn with a pair of trousers. For daily use, men wear ao dai which
are usually brown. However, for special occasions their outf t can be of any colour
and the fabric may have patterns on it. They also wear a headgear. It consists of a
piece of cloth wrapped around their head. Their footwear is a pair of plain sandals.
Conical hats are used by both men and women. Men’s hats usually have a
higher cone and a smaller rim. Women’s conical hats have a low cone and a broad
rim. Women’s conical hats are decorated as well.
