3.6 Types Of Production
According to volume and standardization of the production of the products the
manufacturing systems are classified as: (a) Job type production, (b) Batch production, and
(c) Continuous / mass production.
a. Job Shop Production
It is characterized by manufacturing of one or few quantities of products designed
and produced as per the specifications of the customers within the prefixed time and
cost, i.e., this type of production is distinguished by high variety and low volume.
b. Batch Production
Batch production is characterized by manufacture of limited number of products
produced at regular intervals and stocked at warehouses awaiting sales
Example-Pharmaceutical industry, chemical industry, assembly shop such as
machine tools, subcontractor who take component for processing from large
manufacturer.
c. Mass Production
This is characterized by high volume and low variety. This manufactures several
standard products produced and stocked in the warehouses as finished goods
waiting to be dispatched. Examples of mass production are plastic goods,
manufacture and assembly shops of automobiles.
The types of manufacturing systems are shown in Figure 3.1.
