INTRODUCTION OF FACILITIES PLANNING
3.7 Basic Layout Types
There are four basic layout types:
1. Fixed Material Location Departments (Fixed Product Layout)
2. Production Line Departments (Product Layout)
3. Product Family Departments (Group Layout)
4. Process Departments (Process Layout)
3.7.1 Fixed Material Location Departments (Fixed Product Layout)
Workstation are brought to the material
Associated with very large, bulky products and not limited in their application.
Recommended for batch production
All machines perform similar types are grouped at one area according to
functions
Used in aircraft assembly, shipbuilding, and construction project
Example:
Assembling computer system where material, subassembly and housing are
brought to systems integration and tested at that single location.
3.7.2 Production Line Departments (Product Layout)
Processing parts being produce on the line.
Material flow from one workstation to the next adjacent one.
Nice, well-planned flow path result in this high volume, low-variety environment.
3.7.3 Product Family Departments (Group Layout)
Parts grouped into families based on common processing sequence, shapes,
material composition and so on.
The resulting layout has high degree on intradepartmental flow.
