MATERIAL HANDLING

                                      CHAPTER 5: MATERIAL HANDLING

                     INTRODUCTION

The design of the material handling system is an important component of the

overall facilities design. The layout design and the material handling system design
are inseparable. It is seldom the case that one can be considered without jointly
considering the other case. The integration between these two design functions is
particularly critical in the design of a new facility. Material handling can be observed in
daily activities such as mail delivered in a postal system, parts moved in

                     manufacturing system and etc.

                     LEARNING OBJECTIVES `

                        1. Determine the material handling definition and principle
                        2. Determine the unit load design
                        3. Identify the material handling equipment

                     5.1 Definition of Material Handling

                     Material handling definition:

                     1. MH is an art and science of moving, storing, protecting, and
                                controlling material.

                     2. MH means providing the right amount of the right material in
the right condition, at the right price, at the right time in the right position,

in the right sequence, and for the right cost by the right methods.

                     5.2 Material Handling Principle

                     1. Orientation Principle:
Study the problem thoroughly prior to preliminary' planning in order to

identify existing methods and problems, physical and economic
constraints, and to establish future requirements and goals.
