Unit 4
Every year thousands of visitors come to Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage for both the
Hindus and the Buddhists. Pilgrims and trekkers from all over the world climb up from
the valley of the Kaligandaki, going eastwards on the path, which goes over the high
Thorang La pass to Manang. The country is like the moon because it is so dry. Nothing
grows. There are only bare brown rocky hillsides. And there is Muktinath with its tree-
line streets and apple, plum and peach orchards. In a peaceful park, there are old twisted
trees covered with prayer flags and a temple surrounded by 108 water spouts.
