Define
Blockage of the pulmonary artery (or one of its branches).
Venous thrombosis (a blood clot in a vein) moves from its place of
formation to the arteries in the lungs. Most blood clots come from the
pelvic veins, abdominal veins and venous thrombus in the femoral. This
process is called thromboembolation.
In addition to blood clots, pulmonary embolism can also occur as a result
of fat or bone (associated with injury signalling), air (during diving), tumour
cell clotting, and amniotic fluid (during childbirth).
