CORE PROCEDURE CHECKLIST 1

PEAK FLOW METER

NO PROCEDURE

1. Greet client and introduce self

2. Explain the purpose of the procedure.

3. Perform hand hygiene

4. Instruct patient to sit on a chair or sit on the bed.

5. Instruct patient to attach the mouthpiece to peak flow meter, if desired.

6. Slide indicator to bottom of meter scale to zero position

7. Have patient to hold the peak flow meter horizontally without blocking the markers

Instruct patient to inhale as deeply as possible, and place mouth around the

mouthpiece, forming a tight seal.
9. Have patient to blow out through mouth as hard and as fast as possible.

10. Watch and record a level show on the peak flow meter
11. Repeat steps No. 5 to 9 twice more, and allow rest in between attempts

12. Clean the appliance according to hospital protocol

13. Record the highest readings of the peak flow measurement in Peak Flow Chart

14. Give feedback to the patient

15. Document and report

2. Kidney Dish with soapy water (Cetrimide 1 %)
3. Peak flow meter chart
