METERED DOSE INHALATION

1. Check patient’s notes to confirm doctor’s order

2. Greet patient and introduce self

3. Explain procedure to the patient.

4. Perform hand hygiene

5. Provide privacy

Place patient in upright position / Fowler’s in bed or on the

chair or as allowed by his condition
Show MDI parts to the patient:
- Mouthpiece

- Canister
- Chamber (aerochamber for a child)
Instruct patient to ensure the canister is firmly and fully
9.
inserted into the inhaler

10. Remove cap and hold the inhaler upright.

11. Shake the inhaler 3-5 sec to mix the medication.

12. Instruct patient to exhale slowly through pursed lips

13. Hold the canister on top and the mouthpiece at the bottom
Place the mouthpiece in the mouth, and seal lips around the
14.
mouthpiece.

Pressing down the canister with fingers to release the medicine as the patient start to
15. breathe slowly and deeply through the mouth

Instruct patient to hold his/her breath for 10 seconds to allow the medicine to go
16. deeply into lungs (ask the patient to count 1 – 10)

17. Instruct patient to exhale and relax
Repeat puffs as directed. Wait 1 minute between puffs to
18.
allow the second puff to get into the lungs better.
