Malai Khruie
Floral Sashes
Rarely seen nowadays, malai khruie was initially created by Chaokhunphra
Prayurawongse in the reign of King Rama V. Malai khruie is a large garland usually
made from jasmine or small white gardenias, richly decorated with a malai toom
or small pointed oval garland and an uba song-khruang or elaborate floral tassel
made of crown flowers and dokkha or fabricated flowers. Malai khruie is initially
worn by male courtier around the body like a sash, draping from one shoulder
to the opposing hip as an accessory for ceremonial events. In this lesson, we see
many contemporary adaptations of the traditional form of malai khruie.
