THE RECENT CORAL DISCOVERY

It’s one of the largest coral reef’s in the wor ld and is around 133,000 square miles.
They are around 1,500 types of fish, 411 types of corals and many ot her species that

live in the Great Barrier reef. However, the reef is in danger and the species that live
there. Parts of the reef has died due to coral bleaching which oc curs because of
climate change. Since climate change is unpredictable, it made the water warmer

causing the reefs algae to die and no food to be prod uced for the cor als.

Over a week ago, a huge piece of detached cor al was fou nd in Australia’s great
barrier reef. This piece of coral was massive as it was around 1600 feet which is near
the height of the Empire State building in New Yor k City. In addition , since it is

detached, it is no longer part of the main part of the Great Barrier reef and since its
separate, now unique species may start to live there. Researchers fou nd that the
coral reef that was found detached is around 20 million years ol d in som e areas as

they were checking in Australia’s ocean. In addition, this is the first detached coral
reef that was found in around 120 years. It will be interesting if new species find a
home there.
