General Guidelines for Relief Doctors
Thank you for choosing to be our doctor for today. We are happy you are here to help.
Our primary goal is to provide the absolute best patient care AND client service. We are
focused on QUALITY rather than quantity. There are several ways we do this. Most are
listed below.
Medical records are completed before moving on to the next patient
Medical records are in the “SOAP” format in AVImark under the “Check-in”
Most routine lab tests are done through Antech.
In-house testing is mostly reserved for critical cases or emergencies, except for
ear cytologies, skin scrapings, etc.
If a procedure is expected to take 15 minutes or more we over-estimate the time
to the client and offer them to drop their pet off. We call when ready or with
the next steps needed. This helps us avoid client wait times and appointments
backing up exam rooms.
You have a technician, and a tech assistant scheduled with you today. For
appointments the tech and TA will prep the room. The TA will assist you in the
room. You will dictate what you want for the pet while the TA writes it on a
“tech sheet”
o You will dictate:
Diagnostics needed
Treatments needed
Treatment plans to make and print for the client
Release instructions for the owner.
Next follow-up phone to client – both the date to call and why.
Our technical staff can perform almost all medical procedures you may need, like
blood draws, IV cath, Fluid admin, injections, ear cleanings, wound cleanings,
etc. They will likely need assistance with some cystocentesis or urinary
catheterizations.
We have certain priorities as with all hospitals in triaging which case to work on
first. The team should be aware of this but please be sure the staff takes care of
your patients in this order.
o Emergencies – jump in front of everything
o ICU and Hospitalized cases - ICU orders should always be up to date
o Scheduled appointments
o Urgent care appointments (apptmt time not available, client is fit in)
o Drop offs – if sick enough it needs seen now it should be an emergency.
