VOLCANIC LIGHTNING
When tiny, glassy particles of volcanic
rock billow from an erupting volcano
in a cloud of ash, they rub against each
other and generate electricity, just like
ice crystals in a storm cloud. The
electrical charge can build up until it is
released in bolts of lightning, like these
flashing from an eruption of Japan’s
Sakurajima volcano in January 2013.
