SMOKING SUMMIT
Two thousand years ago a massive eruption
destroyed the summit of Mount Etna,
creating a broad depression that has slowly
filled with lava. There are four active craters
within this summit caldera, which erupt
explosively to blast columns of volcanic
ash and gas high into the air. In winter, the
surrounding slopes are white with snow.
