managed to negotiate (and you have to
negotiate) a reasonable rate for a month's
stay at Azimut who looked after us well.
Arechi Castle overlooks Salerno and as
always my brother and I can't resist a climb
up to a medieval castle. My wife Caro had
no such trouble resisting and settled down
with her book. After about three hours two
very old and tired Kilbrides fell in to the
castle bar after a long, signless search for
the bloody steps. Still my older brother was
impressed near the top where I broke out in
to a very energetic dance having nearly
trodden on a snake. The blood pressure pills
earned their keep that day. Later research proved the snake to be
harmless. From here we explored the Amalfi coast by bus. Very pretty but
far too crowded for our liking. An out of season visit might be better.
Our last sightseeing trip was out to Paestum via the train. Again considering
the significance of this ancient sight, sign posting was lacking but when we
arrived the museum was good and the ruins were spectacular.
Salerno is a thriving and clean town in comparison with Torre Del Greco and
Naples. It has good train links both back to Naples and out to the ancient
Greek ruins at Paestum. We all agreed that if we were to visit this area
again to see these sights we would
probably base ourselves here. There
are plenty of shops, access to the
airport, a market and a good beach.
Not to mention some very interesting
buildings in the town itself.
