Mechanism of Gene Activation
Testosterone travels through the blood and diffuse into
the cells
Testosterone bind to a receptor protein in the cytoplasm
/ nucleus
To form hormone-receptor complex
The hormone-receptor complex
moves towards the nucleus
Bind to a specific regulatory site on DNA
Stimulate expression of specific gene
• Steroid hormones is lipid soluble / Transcription occurs ~ mRNA is synthesised
hydrophobic
• Can easily diffuse across the cell membrane
• Eg: testosterone mRNA enters the cytoplasm
mRNA is translated into specific proteins
