search for Calculator), and press Enter. (Why does pressing Enter
open Calculator? Because it’s the first item in the list of results,
and its name is highlighted.)
Web searches. Because Search also searches online, you can type
things like weather in dallas, ounces in a liter, or bill gates age and
get instant answers.
Calculations. Search is a tiny pocket calculator, always at the
ready. Press , type or paste 38*48.2-7+55, and marvel at the
result, right there in the menu: 1879.6. And you didn’t even have to
fire up the Calculator.
(Use the asterisk, *, to mean “times” and the slash, /, as “divided
by.”)
Dictionary lookups. If you type a word—say, ersatz—into the
search box, you see the dictionary definition in the results. In this
example, that would be: “Adjective: (of a product) made or used as
a substitute, typically an inferior one, for something else.”
Flight info. Search can find you the latest information about a
flight. Just type in the airline and the flight number to get a map of
the flight, status, and other details.
The Taskbar Search Box
Windows still offers search boxes in two different places:
The main search box. The search box at the left end of the
taskbar, labeled “Type here to search,” searches everywhere on
your computer. And beyond—it can also search your network or
the internet.
File Explorer windows. The search box at the top of every
desktop window searches only that window (including any folders
within it).
