Chapter 2 focuses on the structural
design load criteria with an emphasis on
ICC-500-2014: Standard for the Design
and Construction of Storm Shelters. The pur-
pose of ICC-500 is stated as establishing
“minimum requirements to safeguard the
public health, safety and general welfare
relative to the design, construction and
installation of storm shelters constructed
for protection from high winds associated
with tornadoes and hurricanes. This stan-
dard is intended for adoption by govern-
ment agencies and organizations for use in
conjunction with model codes to achieve
uniformity in the technical design and
construction of storm shelters.”
There is also discussion of FEMA
P-361: Safe Rooms for Tornadoes and Hurri-
canes: Guidance for Community and Residen-
A map of shelter design speeds for tornadoes, which is included in Chapter 2 of tial Safe Rooms, as well as ASCE/SEI 7-16:
Design Guide 35.
