AL CAPONE’S SOUP KITCHEN
During the Great Depression, mob boss Al Capone ran a
soupkitchenthatofferedfreemealstoChicago’spoor
and homeless. The gangster — who got rich bootlegging
alcoholduringProhibitionbutwasnotabovemurder,
intimidation or extortion — would even walk among
the queueing masses, offering handshakes and
encouraging words. The kitchen reportedly
fed 5,000 on Thanksgiving Day.
