Capital Region at a Glance
Washington, DC and the four states that make up
the Capital Region lie in the northeastern United
States. This area played an important role in
America’s history – the earliest colonies were
established here, and many battles of the
Revolutionary War and Civil War were fought on
its fields. The region is, therefore, dotted with
magnificent historic sites. Washington, DC is one New River Gorge National
of America’s most visited cities and offers a great River (see p224),
