When comparing three items or more, you can specify the items compared by
saying “X no naka de “among X (the group)”, or list each member of the group
like X to Y to Z no naka de “among X, Y, and Z”. The question word is dore,
dare, doko, etc., depending on the items being compared, and the word ichi-ban
indicates the superlative.
Kono naka de dore ga ichi-ban i’i desu ka.
Among these, which is the best?
X to Y to Z no naka de dore ga ichi-ban i’i desu ka.
Which is the best among X, Y, and Z?
X ga ichiban i’i desu.
X is the best.
GRAMMAR NOTE Dō “How”
Dō literally means “how” and it is part of the ko-so-a-do set with kō, sō, a’ a and
dō.
Onamae wa dō kaku n desu How do you write your name?

– Kō kaku n desu. You write it this way.
There are several expressions that include dō, whose meanings are hard to guess
directly from the original meaning of dō. Let’s review them.
