GRAMMAR NOTE Days of the Week
Yōbi indicates days of the week. There are three variations for each day of the
week. The variations for Monday, for example, are Getsu, Getsu-yō, and Getsu-
yōbi. The longer, the more formal. Abbreviations like the following are also very
common.
Getsu-sui- Monday-Wednesday-Friday
kin
Kā-moku Tuesday-Thursday
Do-nichi Saturday-Sunday
Note that the question word nan-yōbi “what day of the week” CANNOT be used
to ask “what day of the month”, which will be introduced later in Lesson 8 (Page
160).
