                                                        Solnhofen’s fossils were formed in a
                                                        salty lagoon on the edge of the sea.
                                                        The animals that died in the lagoon

                                                        of oxygen in the water. Among the
                                                        specimens found are those of the
                                                        earliest known bird, archaeopteryx.
