       The Hungarian National Museum is the
       country’s richest source of art and artifacts
       relating to its own turbulent history. Founded
       in 1802, the museum owes its existence to
       Count Ferenc Széchényi, who offered his
       collection of coins, books and documents

                Campaign Chest
         This carved Baroque cam paign
        chest features the prince regent’s
      decoration and the Hungarian crest.
      It dates from the insurrection led by
            Ferenc II Rákóczi (see p30).





                        Armchair
                       Adorned with multi­
                       coloured fruit and floral
                        ornamentation, this
                           armchair dates
                           from the early
                           18th century. It is
                        the work of Ferenc II
                        Rákóczi, who learnt
                         carpentry during his
                         exile in Turkey.









            . Coronation Mantle
         This textile masterpiece, made
         of Byzantine silk, was donated
        to the church in Székesfehérvár
       by St Stephen in 1031. It became
          the coronation mantle in the
                  12th century.
