A HUGE GAMBLE
Not only was the Canto Bight
Casino—which was constructed on
the 007 Stage at Pinewood Studios
in the U.K.—one of the biggest
sets created for The Last Jedi, it
was one of the most challenging.
Supervising art director Chris Lowe
makes note of how the team “had
to create a very large cavernous
gambling space with a bar in it for
the action sequence. The scale of
it was driven by the sequence itself
and the scale of the fathiers, the
creatures specific to the scene. We
used lots of mirrors to throw the
scale and keep the distance going.”
Ultimately, the build, which
took place over a 16-week period,
was so large that it had to be split
across two stages at Pinewood,
with the exterior built at Longcross
and the medieval city of Dubrovnik
standing in for the city of Canto
Bight, where the Casino is situated
and where the action spills out. The
sets were populated by hundreds
of extras dressed to the nines
by costume designer Michael
Kaplan, along with numerous
incredible creatures created and
puppeteered by Neal Scanlan and
his team, and rigged for action by
SFX supervisor Chris Corbould and
stunt coordinator Rob Inch. As Rian
Johnson puts it, “It was a multi-
department extravaganza!”
