to painting with this depiction of the Battle of
Cherbourg, 19 June 1864, in the American
Civil War. Here a gun crew of the USS
Kearsarge celebrate as the CSS Alabama
is seen to be sinking. The two ships
were the only combatants in
the clash off the French
coast.
