          This sandstone building was completed in 1842 with four
          wards of 18 beds each. The basement housed the kitchen

                                              Asylum
                                              By 1872, Port Arthur’s asylum
                                              housed more than 100 mentally ill or
                                              senile convicts. When the settlement
                                              closed, it became the town hall, but
                                              now serves as a museum and café.

                          Completed in 1836, Port
                          Arthur’s church was never
                         consecrated because it was
                       used by all denominations. The
                        building was gutted by fire in
                         1884, but the ruins are now
                               fully preserved.
