the gauntlet of kitchenware, cheap clothing and other workaday fare, though before
long you’ll track down one of the areas with stalls selling ethnic beads and fabrics.
Naung Tung Lake
• Best accessed from the Taunggyi–Tachileik Rd to the south, or the small road south of Amazing Kyaing Tong hotel
to the east
At the heart of Kengtung, the small Nang Tung Lake is undoubtedly the prettiest place
in the city. The best views are from the east side, near the Azure café (see p.273), from
where you can make out the standing Buddha statue (see p.272), framed by the Shan
mountains cascading into the distance – particularly beautiful during sunset. You can
walk around the whole lake in half an hour along the small and relatively traffic-free
road which circles it. Overlooking the lake from the east is the town’s old colonial
quarter, which includes several buildings surviving from the British era; best is the
Colony House on Mong Yang Road.
