ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE KENGTUNG
Foreigners are prohibited from travelling overland between Taunggyi and Kengtung by bus or any other form of
unlicensed transport, meaning your only options are to fly or to arrange the trip using a licensed government guide and
transport – for which you won’t get much change out of $1000. Foreigners are, however, permitted to take the bus 6
between Kengtung and Tachileik, with the correct paperwork (see below), and also to visit the notorious border town
of Mong La – although we don’t recommend that you do (see box, p.274).

ACCOMMODATION
Kengtung has very few decent places to stay, and most find that a couple of nights here is more than enough. Note that
though the following places claim to have wi-fi, it often goes down across the whole town. All places listed have a/c unless
stated otherwise.

EATING
Eating options in Kengtung are decidedly thin on the ground. As well as the places listed below there are plenty of snack-
shacks around the market and on the streets leading down to the lake from Mong Yang Road. At night, you could try to
track down one of the town’s many barbecue-stick places for some cheap, tasty snacks; there’s one on the east shore of
the lake, near the corner where the road descends.
