Pyin Oo Lwin and around
Situated on a lush plateau 65km east of Mandalay, PYIN OO LWIN sits far above the dust
of central Myanmar. At an elevation of 1070m, the town is famed for its pleasant
climate, with temperatures seldom creeping above 30˚C, even in summer. It was
established formally only in 1896, on the site of a British army camp near a small Shan
village named Pyin Oo Lwin, and renamed Maymyo, or “May Town”, after a Colonel
James May who was stationed here (the name was changed back after independence).
After the construction of the railway from Mandalay reduced the journey time from
two days in a bullock cart to a mere five hours, it developed rapidly as a hill station,
providing refuge from the heat of lower Burma. From the turn of the twentieth
century, the entire British establishment decamped here at the start of each summer,
