a favourite with domestic film-makers. If you’re feeling seriously flush, the five-
bedroom house can be yours for $1950 a night. If you book it they’ll close the museum
and shoo away the day-trippers for the duration of your stay. Downhill is a discreet
cluster of more affordable bungalows.
Shan Market and around
• 2km northeast of Purcell Tower, Mandalay–Lashio Rd • Daily 6am–4pm
Start the morning at the bustling Shan Market on the eastern side of town, which is at
its busiest between 6.30am and 8am. Originally, Shan farmers gathered here to sell
their produce because of the market’s proximity to their villages east of Pyin Oo Lwin,
and while it’s still a great place to visit, nowadays the full-time Chinese, Shan and
Burmese stallholders favour imported and generic goods. To find the farmers who
come by in the mornings, you may have more luck heading 600m further east along
the Mandalay–Lashio Road, to Zayad Kadone street market.
Circular Road and the suburbs
Circular Road started life as a forest ride for British officers. Today, the leafy
thoroughfare follows a semicircle around the eastern half of Pyin Oo Lwin,
